You can avoid using too many direct quotations by either paraphrasing or summarising. Paraphrasing is rewriting text in your own words and own voice while summarising is extracting the key ideas and main points from an information source that you want to use. Using a lot of direct quotes is not considered good practice because it doesn't indicate that you understand what you're reading as much as paraphrasing and summarising do.
