A citation is a reference to a source of information that you have used in your research. When you use an information source in your work, you have to:
- refer to it in in the text of your work whenever you mention it
- in your list of references used, include enough information for a reader to be able to find an information source
The mention of the information source in your text is called a citation or more commonly, an in-text citation. The in-text citation contains the author(s) surname(s) and the year of publication, such as in the image below, taken from an academic journal article
